PEOPLE AT WORK
THE GREEN SEA OF LIGURIAN BASIL
Photographed during a study trip with the University of Gastronomic Sciences, this series documents the cultivation of Ligurian basil inside the greenhouses of Ruggero Rossi.
Growers cultivate the basil under controlled conditions to protect its delicate aroma, bright color, and quality. This hand harvest is a process that demands a good eye and physical endurance.

A BASKET FULL OF PEARS
Liguria is both coast and mountain; its agriculture unfolds across terraced hillsides carved into the landscape. This region holds a remarkable variety of flavors. I tried basil, grapes, olives, focaccia, chinotto and meat.
We came to visit his chinotto orchard, but he greeted us instead with a basket full of freshly picked pears and they were crisp, sweet, and unexpectedly refreshing.
The labor of cultivation has no retirement age. It’s a rhythm of life that endures season after season.
